The Adventures of Autumn and Levi: Part 7, Apartment Hunting [p r i v a t e--To Rempy] Autumn

Autumn grumbled irritably, throwing her packed up suitcases onto the hotel bed. Since the attack last week, and since their near death multiple times, Levi and Autumn, but mostly Levi, had found it best to move cities. So they chose one that was more polite. Savannah, Georgia. After traveling around trying to find a good city, Savannah was the best option. Everyone there was nice and friendly, and there was a great art school nearby that Autumn could attend in her free time. However, Autumn was sad to leave her home. She sighed, folding her arms behind her head. Their old apartment was packed up and bare and all of their things were being shipped via U-Haul drivers and would arrive once they found the new apartment. It was finding it that was the issue, and today was the first "Apartment hunting" day. Autumn groaned, rubbing her eyes. "I don't even see why we have to move in the first place... I don't think Lester would come after us, and besides, even if he did, you kicked his ass last time. And three of his four goons are dead," she pointed out, sitting up with a sigh.

Levi, who was now stretched out on one of the hotel beds, grinned at her. "We couldn't take the chance. Besides, I didn't exactly kick his ass. He nearly had me, I won by complete luck." Swinging his legs off of the bed, he let them dangle, examining the bandage on his left foot. After the incident where he had broken his foot, he had to put less pressure on it, and now had a pair of crutches. He only had to use them for another week or so, but it was still was a nuisance. This turned his mind to another thing; they hadn't discussed his leaving since he had returned. Not once had they even brought the subject up. In a way, that was the entire reason they had to leave.

Autumn rose to her feet and sat next to Levi. She followed his gaze to his foot and her brow furrowed. "How's your foot? I have Advil if it's hurting," she said in a worried tone. She still felt guilty for falling for Lester's trap. She still blamed herself for Levi getting hurt, but she tried not to show it. On many occasions, Autumn would want to ask why he'd even left in the first place, but she always chickened out. She feared she'd hear a reason that she didn't like, so she just kept her curiosities to herself. Autumn sighed, looking down at her hands. "I'm really sorry...that you got hurt because of me..." she murmured, realizing she hadn't yet apologized out loud for being an idiot. Autumn lifted her head, locking her gaze with Levi's. She opened her mouth to speak, but then abruptly shut it and shook her head. She rose to her feet, rummaging through her suitcase. Though she wasn't really looking for anything. "We don't have to go out today... We can wait to find some place until you're off your crutches," she offered.

"No, no it's fine," he said, waving away all of her words. Retrieving the crutches, he stood, and limped the nearest window. Staring outside, he examined the buildings, deep in thought. "I think we need to to talk," he began, turning to face her. "It's about me leaving." Thinking, he realized she might take it the wrong way. "No, I'm not leaving again. About last time, I mean." Inhaling deeply, he silently pondered the reason he left. "I wanted to get away because I was confused, and guilty. It was because of me that you'd been hurt, and I didn't want it to happen again. I feel the same way on this. There's no reason for you to be sorry. If you hadn't been in my company, they wouldn't have kept you prisoner. I..." He became choked up, unable to continue. "I just wanted you to know that I'm sorry. For everything." Levi offered a minuscule smile, but shifted uneasily. He always hated these awkward moments.

Autumn stared at him in bewilderment. She took a moment to process his words, feeling her mind flood with information. "You think it's your fault I was held captive? I was stupid! I fell for Lester's trick when he told me that he had you prisoner. He was right when he said it was my fault. I could have called you to see if you were okay, or I could have followed him later... It's my fault. I shouldn't even had been out at night! But I got distracted... I was just sort of in a daze, I didn't even realize it had gotten dark.." Autumn shook her head, rubbing her eyes with a sigh. Taking in a deep breath, Autumn closed the distance between her and Levi in a few strides. She had a firm look in her eyes when she placed her hands on Levi's shoulders. "Listen to me, none of this was your fault. Not what happened in Ireland and not the incident with Lester. In Ireland I trusted Andrew too quickly, and I fell for Lester's tricks too easily. I was stupid, hell, I probably still am. But..." her voice trailed off and she lowered her hands, taking a sudden interest in her shoes. "You're one of the first good things that's happened to me in a long time... And when I realized that I wanted to be around you for as long as possible, I promised myself I wouldn't let anything bad happen to you. And I guess I got a little carried away..." Autumn sighed and plopped down on the nearest bed. "But you can handle yourself, I just have to realize that. I'm just...protective of you...that's all."

Levi listened to the whole story, before shifting awkwardly and sitting his crutches against the wall. Limping forward, he let himself fall onto the bed beside her. "Autumn," he began, sighing. He had to be honest, instead of trying to convince himself of another lie. "I'm always getting us into trouble, because I'm jealous, I guess. You have these cool powers and all that, and I'm just...I'm just Levi. I want to be this big hero, and I'm not. I guess I was just tired of being the one saved, instead of being the savior." He sighed, slouching in guilt. "I was being foolish. I needed to realize that I was only putting you into danger, for my own want. I was stupid." Levi frowned, reviewing his words. "I am stupid," he corrected himself, leaning back and staring at the ceiling. "Don't convince yourself that any of this was your fault. In Ireland, he saw that you were with a Vampire, therefore you got mixed in. If I hadn't even got involved with you, Lester would have no reason to hold you prisoner." He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.

Autumn shook her head, turning to Levi. "Levi..." her voice trailed off and she flopped onto her back with a groan. "What are we doing?!" she said, burying her face in her hands. "We're both trying to convince the other why it's our own fault! Shouldn't it be the other way around?" she pointed out. Letting her hands flop to either side of her head, she craned her neck to look up at Levi. She stared at him for a moment before she sighed, sitting up again. "I just...I don't want you to blame yourself so much that you leave again. Because if I really believed myself to be in danger and believed that you were the one causing it, I could leave. I don't have to stay, I could be the one that leaves, instead of you. But I don't want to leave, because it's not your fault these things are happening. I guess it's not really mine either. If you think about it, it's an unfortunate even that caused us to meet. If the bus hadn't been late that day, we wouldn't have met. There's always going to be those what ifs...but that's all they are. We can't change them, so there's no use fretting about it," she explained. Autumn smiled, resting her head on Levi's shoulder. "And remember, you're not "just Levi". You have the ability to enjoy sunlight. To go out when others like you can't. That's something special... A special power that other vampires envy. Don't sell yourself short, okay?"

Levi considered her words silently. Covering his face, he chuckled for a moment, realizing that she correct. "You're right," he muttered, glancing at her. "That's thing, though. "Other Vampires envy..." I'm a Vampire, and we only bring trouble. It's always been that way. Didn't you hear any of the old tales? Vampires have always been harbingers of despair and sadness. It's a known fact. But you, you're a Shapeshifter. You've got these amazing talents, and you've traveled all over the globe. You're still a Shapeshifter though, meaning that one day you will die, unlike me. I have forever to make new memories and get over the bad parts of my life. I don't want you to look back on these times and think "Oh, that's the time I nearly died," or something like that." He stared at the carpet, frowning. The words made incredible sense to him, though he suspected it wouldn't be as clear to her; besides, everyone had their own opinions and emotions.

Autumn took in a breath, shaking her head. "You know, I'm not a big fan of my shapeshifting abilities...they're not all they've cracked up to be. Did you know that if I wasn't a shapeshifter I would be fifty-three right now?" she said, turning to Levi. She'd never revealed her full age to him, though she hoped it didn't freak him out. "Yeah...fifty-three. I'd probably be married and have a kid or two. But that won't ever happen. I could fall for a human, but then they'd die, like my mom. I could try and find a male shapeshifter, but about 90% of the shapeshifters alive are members of that stupid "religious" group. And I've constantly got this grip on my sanity. A tight, tight grip that grows tighter every time I change shape for just a little bit too long. Ever since my break down in Africa, I'm barely able to hold onto my mental stability. Most shapeshifters that fall into what I did lose themselves completely. They have to be forcefully sedated and disposed of. I, somehow, regained enough of myself to function. But when I try and push myself or I try and stay in an unnatural state for just a little bit too long, I can feel that wild...that wild thing I was trying to claw its way to the surface..."
When she finished ranting, she turned to Levi and sighed, shaking her head. "You know what I'm going to think when I look back on these times we're having together? I'm going to wish I could go back to them. Because once I've grown old and we've drifted apart, I'm going to remember you and wish that we could still be friends... But I'm going to look back on these times as the "glory days" or whatever they're called," she explained, offering a sad smile. It was hard for her to think what it would be like that far into the future. No doubt Levi would find their friendship strange once she's that elderly. Granted, that was multiple lifetimes away, but it was still a sad subject to think about.
Autumn shook her head, rising to her feet. "So you say you want to look for apartments today, huh? Well if you're up to it, we'd better head out," she said, trying to change the subject.

Levi's guilt grew intensely as she spoke. When she attempted to change subjects, he happily obliged, standing and retrieving the crutches again. "First off, we need to set a few ground rules. No purple, no pink, and no outrageously colored carpeting." He grinned, shifting on the crutches until he was comfortable. "Second, the view has to be great. I don't want to stare at bricks all day." Thinking, he glanced around for a moment, before coming up with another idea. "It has to be huge. I mean, like legit huge. I want it to be so big, it takes an hour to lap it." Grinning widely, he shrugged. "Okay, you can take off those last two, I guess. Still, no odd or extremely different flooring; it hurts my eyes." Levi chuckled, and limped past her, standing in the middle of the room. "I just can't wait until we get out of this room. It's so...confining."

Autumn smiled, rolling her eyes. "Well I can try and dip into our savings to get those things, but we might have to compromise," she said, shaking her head. Autumn grabbed her bag, thinking for a moment. "My requirements are...at least two bed rooms so that we each have our own room. A place that I can do my art work. A nice kitchen we can both move around in... and a bay window with a window bench. I've always wanted one," she explained. Autumn opened the door, making sure she grabbed her key card before she stepped into the hall. "But it'd be great to have a library or something! I'd love that," she said in a dreamy voice. Autumn began picturing this big house with lots of land and room for animals and all of these wonderful things, but she snapped out of it. A light blush spread across her cheeks and she gave a shy smile. "Maybe we should lower our expectations a bit.."

ooc: I found them a house. xD Seriously...I looked.

Levi noticed the slight coloration of her cheeks, and chuckled. "Of course not!" he jousted at her suggestion. "Only the best. You need room for your art, and I need room for..." He shrugged, a toothy grin spreading across his face. "Lazing around, in general. It requires a lot of effort and space to be inactive, you wouldn't even understand." Levi laughed, nodding as if agreeing with himself. "We should get a pool or something too; some kind of leisure item. Maybe a jacuzzi..." He spoke the last words with a smile, dreamily imagining their future hot-tub. Of course, they most likely wouldn't have one, but he could dream. Shrugging again, he followed after her, keeping up with her to the best of his abilities.

Autumn rolled her eyes and lowered her pace a bit to accommodate to Levi's crutches. "A pool I'd be open for, but I'm not a jacuzzi person. The place that we get should allow pets," she said with a wide grin. Autumn had always loved having animals. She'd simply leave her door open to allow animals in. Though she wasn't allowed to do that in her old apartment. Autumn pressed the down button beside the elevator and bounced on her toes. "So I did some research and I was thinking that we'd look in the Historic District. It has the best pricing and it's close to parks and the actual city. So what do you think?" she asked, boarding the elevator when the doors slid open.

Levi followed her onto the elevator, nodding. "Sounds good," he agreed. Leaning against one of the small walls, he examined Autumn, silently remembering everything they had been through. "I never told you where my parents live," he realized vocally. "Louisiana." He said the location matter-of-factly, as if it should have been obvious. It wasn't, of course, with Levi's outlandish behavior. Disregarding the moment as a simple fill-in of random facts, he grinned and thought back on her pet comment. "I want to get a dog," he explained, grinning ear to ear. "An australian shepherd, more specifically. They're just so awesome and adorable and..." He let his sentence fade, glancing at the floor shyly. It was a boyish gesture, and revealed just how embarrassed Levi was to share his ideas.

Autumn smiled, her expression brightening. "I love Australian Shepherds! I like the Red Merle ones...with the red, white and brown coats with blue eyes," she paused, picturing the animal in her head. "Kind of like this," Her form glowed a silver light and she changed into the form of an Australian Shepherd that she had described. Her tail swished happily and she shook out her thick coat. The elevator dinged, indicating that the doors were about to open. Autumn quickly reverted back to her original shape and the silver glow faded just as the doors slid open. She smiled mischievously and wiggled her eyebrows. That daring glint that was in her eyes the first time she changed shape in front of Levi was there once again. She scurried out of the elevator, holding the door open for her friend and his crutches.

Levi beamed at the dog, or Autumn, and nodded. "Exactly like that! They're my favorite. They're so loyal and smart." He let the child in him come out for a moment, praising the dogs for their abilities. Noticing the small ding, he glanced over as the doors slid open, and by the time he looked back, Autumn was already her normal self again. "Impressive," he said, whistling and chuckling. "Close call, though." Following behind her with his slight limp, he rolled his head around, popping his neck. "The worst thing about having a broken leg is how stiff I am. All I've done is laid down lately." Normally, Levi did regularly lay down, but his could shift and move and other things to lessen his uncomfortable. Having a broken shin-bone stopped him from moving too much, or else horrible pain would come. He shrugged, swinging to face her. "Ah well, I'll get over it." Grinning, he turned awkwardly again, and went forward a few steps. "Lead on," he called to her, gesturing ahead with one of the crutches.

Autumn laughed, shaking her head. "Well then I guess we'll go look at some homes in the Historic District then? Since we're in that area right now, let's just start on this street! Right now we're on..." Autumn paused, looking around for street signs. When she spotted one, she smiled and gave a nod of her head. "Right now we're on East Charleton street. So what do you say we walk around and go check it out?" she suggested. Without waiting for a reply, she started down the street. Across from them was a park. Or, as they called them here, squares. There were squares on almost every street corner in the Historic District. All of them were commemorating some person or event. No matter what they were for, they added beauty and shade and a place to sit and read, so Autumn didn't care. With all the trees around, she felt like she was in a forest, but the area was so bright and vibrant. And it was a five minute walk to get anywhere like a store or to buy food or to go shopping. Autumn let out a small squeak of excitement and hopped up on her toes. "It's so beautiful here!"

Levi snickered at her reaction, looking around as they walked. "I do have to admit, it is pretty awesome." Frowning, he cursed his leg; without crutches, he'd have so much more freedom to roam and explore the area with ease. That drew his mind to another thing. "If anyone asks," he started, smiling widely, "I got into a large fight with six guys, and I took all of them down barehanded, but the last one ran me over with his truck." He laughed quietly, before returning his gaze to the buildings and area around them.

Autumn stopped when she saw a house with a "For Sale" sign in its, rather small, lawn. Autumn examined the outside, peeking around a moment before she shrugged. "Not bad, looks a little small, though.." She house was thin and tall and was squished between two others that looks remarkably similar to it. There was a small patch of greenery in front of the house, but nothing extraordinary. Autumn sighed and tapped her foot. "Our realtor should be here soon.. She's the realtor for the houses in the Historic District, so she'll give us access to the homes for sale. I texted her before we left, so she should be here soon.." she explained.

Levi nodded, yawning and glancing around. The streets were exceptionally quiet today, so it was just them and the nine or ten others on the sidewalk. "It's better than the apartment, though. Or the hotel room." He shrugged, and squinted, peering at some of the minor details and the architecture of the building. "I'm not sure about this house, though. I'd like to have a bit more room. It seems a little stuffy." He pursed his lips, tilting his head to examine the two beside it. "Neighbors matter too. I don't want them getting into my business, or yours. Preferably, I'd like to have neighbors that'd leave us alone." He winced, remembering the annoying neighbors that his parents had; they'd always bring pie and pinch his cheeks and such. It was a rather hated memory of his, one that he tried to archive in his forget section.

"Autumn?" an unfamiliar voice said. Autumn turned to see a woman standing a few feet from them. She had a clipboard in her hands and was wearing a business blazer and matching skirt. Her face was the one plastered on all the "For Sale" signs in Savannah Georgia, so she was easily recognized. Autumn smiled, letting out a silent sigh of relief when she found that she was human. "Hello Ms. Sellner. Yep, I'd be Autumn and this is Levi," she said, nudging her friend gently in the arm. Ms. Sellner smiled, and shook her head. "Please please, call me Gale. Well it's wonderful to meet both of you! Such a young, handsome couple," she cooed, smiling pleasantly. Autumn opened her mouth to protest, but decided that it'd just be easier to just let it slide. Gale Sellner smiled and slipped her pen into her clipboard. "Alright, so let me tell you about this property. It's listed at $250,000, but that's negotiable since it's been on the market for so long. It's 1,030 sqft with two bed rooms and 1.5 baths. So would you like to explore outside first? Or head inside and look at the house?" she asked. Autumn turned to Levi, wanting to get his opinion.

Levi turned quickly yet awkwardly. Smiling broadly, he nodded, listening to the house's information and such. Pursing his lips, he glanced backwards at it, and shrugged. "Let's take a look inside, I guess." He shrugged, and nodded, examining the woman. She seemed like the typical realtor, so he dismissed her and turned back towards the house. He was in no hurry to lead, so he waited until one of the others would lead them inside. At $250,000 he figured that it wouldn't be too bad, but they could no doubt lower the price a bit, especially with his sense of negotiation. Still, when he looked at the house, he couldn't picture himself living in it. It didn't seem to be too much of a straight shot, but he let it go, and continued waiting.

The realistate agent nodded her head and Autumn noticed that her hair did not move even the slightest bit a she did so. "Yeah, let's head inside," she replied. Mrs. Sellner made her way towards the door, through the small strip of grass at the front of the house, and onto the porch. She riffled through her large amounts of spare keys. They jingled against each other as she tried to find the right one. While she was distracted, Autumn turned to Levi with a small frown. "I want to see the inside...but I don't know. I just can't picture myself living here. And besides, I'm hoping for three bedrooms so we can each our own room and still have a guest room. But again, my wish list is a little high. Three bedroom, 2.5 bath, two stories at least, maybe three so I can turn the basement into a studio. I don't know, but I know this house doesn't seem to fit any of those requirements. What about you? What are you hoping for?" she asked.

Levi shrugged, managing to restrain the small grin that had appeared, mostly due to her long wishlist. In truth, he hadn't thought too hard about what he wanted in a house. He could live with whatever was chosen for him, because in all honesty, he was bumming off of Autumn. As long as she wanted a house, he could agree and smile and it'd all be fine. "Same," he said, with a tiny nod of his head. "I can't see you, er, us living in this house. It doesn't seem correct. Not enough room, not enough for you to have a substantially large studio, which is a must. I think we should also have..." Biting at the inside of his mouth, he shrugged again, unsure of where his sentence was headed. All he really wanted was for Autumn to be happy with the home. Besides, he wasn't even sure how long he'd stick around. He was no better than a parasite, living off of someone else for his own good. But it was also because Levi cared Autumn, and he felt like he was some kind of a protector. He scowled a bit at his own "parasite" thought, and wondered if it had spawned from the twisted, vamparism part of his mind.

Autumn shrugged her shoulders and followed the real estate agent inside. "I don't know. I'm just glad to be out of an apartment and I'm glad to have someone living with me," she said with a small smile. "I always hated living alone. I would leave to an empty house and come home to an empty house. It was really lonely. And even though I chose that life, I'm glad I have someone there, you know?" she said, nodding her head. "So you two aren't really interested in this home, are you?" Mrs. Sellner interrupted. She had a coy smile on her thin face. Autumn scrunched up her nose and shook her head. "Not particularly. But who knows, maybe the inside is better than the outside," she said. Autumn then noticed that she was inside of the house. The walls were all white and bland. The house was two stories tall. The entry way had a large chandelier hanging from the ceiling. There was a carpeted staircase, hardwood floors, and bland furniture. It wasn't a horrible house, but it just wasn't...it.
