The adventures of Autumn and Levi: Part 5, A tour of the castles [p r i v a t e--To Rempy] Autumn

The week had been going better since that first day. There hadn't been any other confrontations with the shapeshifters after that first incident, and it had been a lovely trip so far. It was the fourth day, with three days left, and Autumn had to admit, she would be sad to leave. The city of Dublin was beautiful. The culture was thick and fun, the food was delicious, all in all, she was having a wonderful time. and hopefully Levi was as well. But today was the day she had scheduled with Andrew, the waiter, on their first day in Ireland. He was going to drive them to the castle ruins a few miles south. Autumn bounced in her seat happily. She gathered her things in her bag, awaiting the knock on their door that signaled that Andrew was here for them. Autumn grinned, fixing her hair another time before she spoke. "Levi! Come on! Andrew's going to be here soon!" she called, hoping her friend would be ready before Andrew arrived.

Levi was still laying on his bed, as he had been all day. By now, of course, he had dressed up and was on top of the newly-made sheets. Sighing, he sat up, and letting his legs dangle. "Yeah, yeah," he replied, standing and stretching his nerves. From the bed, he retrieved the one thing he had gotten since arriving in Ireland. It was a simple, yet no doubt durable butterfly knife. Swiveling it around once, he grinned before sliding it into his pocket. Since the Shapeshifter encounter, Levi had been extra cautious, and had spotted the knife in an miscellaneous stall. Sliding his hands into his pockets, he trudged towards the door, leaning against the wall. "How far is this place anyways? I wanted to get back early enough to eat at that one place. They have a fish special tonight, and I love fish..."

Autumn thought for a moment before she shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know, maybe an hour or two? I highly doubt it's going to take us very long," she said. She opened her mouth to speak again but there was a knock at the door. Autumn smiled and walked towards the door. She peaked through the peep hole to see their tour guide standing just outside their room. Autumn opened the door and smiled at Andrew. "Hey, we're super excited! But we'd better be back by dinner, Levi wants to be at one of the restaurants for their fish special," she explained. Andrew's smile flickered a bit and he cleared his throat. "Levi's joining us?" he asked, arching an eyebrow. Autumn nodded her head and smiled. "Of course," she said matter-of-factly. Andrew shuffled his foot a bit, but grinned and nodded his head. "Well then we'd better get going!"

Levi shifted awkwardly, feeling like the third wheel. It was obvious that Andrew hadn't expected the Vampire to join them, and it was rather obvious that he wasn't too keen on the idea. Keeping silent, he bounced on his tiptoes, glancing between the two. "So, we should go..." Running his hand through his hair, he grinned at the other male, unsure of what to say. "Old castles, eh? I um...like them." The sentence came out choppy and awkward, as if it didn't belong in the nonexistent conversation.

Autumn grinned, looking over at Levi. "I'm excited for the ruins. I brought my camera and my sketchpad, so I'm set to go for a day of entertainment," the girl said, draping her arm over Levi's shoulder. She looked over at her friend and tilted her head. "So what do you think we'll see there, Levi? Crumbling walls, creepy paintings that watch you when you walk, what?" she asked, attempting to include her friend in the conversation. It was difficult, trying to flirt and not make Levi feel as though he was unimportant at the same time. However, Levi was more important to her than Andrew. So he came first on her list.

"Yes, of course," he said, agreeing sarcastically. Levi knew what Autumn was doing, and he didn't like it much at all. If Levi felt like he was the odd one out, that's because he was. These two were both connected in a way, while Levi was just the lame friend who hung around because he had had nowhere else to go. "We might see demons," he said, matter-of-factly. In all realism, the demons preferred ruins and the darkest places, where they could quietly feed on tourists.

Autumn looked over at Levi with a blank expression. She rolled her eyes, giving a snort of laughter. "A lovely though. Maybe they'll let me draw them first...I'be never gotten a chance to observe a demon.." she mused, thinking about the predicament. She could easily imagine the three trapped by a demon in a corner and her stepping out and asking if she could draw the demon before it devoured her. She frowned, looking between Levi and Andrew. "Is it sad that I can picture myself doing that?" she asked, arching an eyebrow. Andrew chuckled, nodding his head. "Yes. Yes it is," he replied. Autumn smiled sheepishly and shrugged her shoulders.
Well, this is my car. Hop in, it'll only be about a ten minute drive to the ruins," Andrew said, walking around to the other side. Autumn opened up the back seat on the driver's side and slid into her seat.

Levi opened the back passenger's side, sliding into the seat by Autumn. Silently he wondered why didn't just sit upfront, but he restrained from asking. It was odd, today. Where Levi was usually the talkative and charismatic person many knew him as, today he was sheepish and restricted, not speaking nor looking at them as the car began moving. Instead, he stared out the window, watching a few buildings pass. It absently reminded of him of when he used to ride the bus to school; it seemed like such a mortal act now, despite how bad he wanted it back. But, he knew he could never had it back, for it was gone forever.

Autumn glanced over at Levi, who was strangely silent. She sighed, feeling as though she was doing a bad job as his friend. It was her job to include him in the conversation, but it didn't seem to be working.
The drive was short, though it seemed much longer since it was silent. The car pulled to a stop in a gravel road that led up to the crumbling stone walls of the tall castle. Autumn's eyes were lit with wonder and, before the car was even turned off, she scrambled out of the car. "Oh it's so beautiful!" she exclaimed. The castle stood tall, though fading, on a hill. On its right, you could see Dublin for miles. On its left was a tall cliff that lead out to the blue, Irish Sea. Autumn pulled out her camera, snapping pictures of the castle. She leaned back, wanting to get a full view of it. She shifted into an eagle, deciding to get an aerial view of the beautiful, old castle. She couldn't take a picture now, but it was just as beautiful from above. After she was content, she swooped back down to the ground, shifting as she landed. She smiled over at her friends, bouncing up and down. "Let's go inside!" she exclaimed.

Levi shifted uncomfortably, not even noticing that they had arrived until a voice roused him from his daydreaming. Glancing over, he spotted the ruins, instantly notable for it's typical yet amazing old look. Pushing the door open, he emerged from car, crossing his arms and examining them with a small twinge of awe. "It really is pretty cool," he said to himself. As Autumn shifted into an eagle, Levi cleared his throat, not too content with the idea of being alone around Andrew. Of course, he had no major problems with the boy, but in a foreign land, with no connections whatsoever, nobody was to trusted. When she had returned and proposed the idea of entering, he raised an eyebrow. Shrugging, he chuckled lightly, nodding. "Sure, what the heck?" Glancing at the other male, he spoke. "I'm assuming you don't disagree?"

Andrew smiled, gesturing towards the ruins with a nod of his head. "Please, do right ahead. I'll catch up in a minute, but my boss just texted me," he said, waving his phone around a moment. Autumn shrugged her shoulders and turned to Levi with a grin. "Come on!" she exclaimed. Without waiting for a reply, Autumn scampered into the crumbling castle, taking no time to find her way inside. She looked up at a broken stained glass window and focused her camera on it. As she was adjusting her focus, she was shoved to the ground. Her camera through out of her hand and shattered as it his the ground. Before she could react, her hands were tied behind her back. Tightly. SHe let a shriek, kicking and lashing out at whatever or whoever was restraining her. "Now now, dearest Autumn, don't fight. It will be over before you know it.." a familiar voice cooed. Autumn snarled, kicking at air as she large men behind her held her down. "You owe me a new camera you bastard!" she hollered. McDowell's eyes flickered to his phone and he scowled. "Her friend is here... Kill him, he's of no use to us," he spat. Autumn's eyes widened and she thrashed and kicked wildly. "Levi! Levi RUN! Get out!" she screamed. She opened her mouth to continue, but it was muffled by a large hand. She could see, out of the corner of her eye, three shapeshifters head towards the entrance she had come in to search for LEvi.

When Levi heard a shriek, he jumped a bit, and his mind was instantly flung into reaction mode. This was no scream you would let out when faced against a spider, or when you tripped; this was a full-fledged, danger scream. Running as fast as his feet could carry him, he sprinted towards the ruins. That was, until another shout stopped him. Wheeling backwards at the warning, he tripped over a stone, falling onto the grass. "Dammit!" he exclaimed, seeing the three head towards him. Digging into his pocket, he searched for the pocketknife he had previously put in there. Retrieving it, he shuffled to his feet, waving it around in threat. Levi hadn't had much experience in fighting groups of people, but he knew one thing; he couldn't let them get at his nerves, or take him all at once. Jumping at the nearest, he thrust the small knife out like a lance, attempting to regain composure. With the Shapeshifter focused on the blade, Levi swung his leg out, knocking the enemies legs out from under him. Giving him a good, swift kick to the side of the head, he moved on.

Turning on the next closest, he swung the butterfly knife in a wide arc, attempting to slash his arm. Having no training in this field, he missed, but still managed to drive his shoulder into the other one's chest. Groaning, Levi kicked his foot out at the last one, hitting him in the knee-cap. It didn't take the man down, but it gave the Vampire an opportunity. Throwing the knife like one would throw an ax, he didn't even glance back to see if it had struck it's target. Swiveling on his heels, he once again dashed towards the broken-up building, determination sunken into his eyes. Finding his way in as fast as possible, he glanced around, frowning. "Autumn!" He had spotted his companion, accompanied by the McDowell. "I knew it," he muttered, anger showing in his eyes. "I just knew that Andrew fellow wasn't what he seemed."

Autumn shut her eyes, focusing on changing her form. She grew and grew, causing the shapeshifters restraining her to fall backwards. THe silver light faded and she stood as a elephant. She stomped on one of the large man's legs, hoping that it hurt as much as his scream made it sound. One of the brutes grunted and scrambled to his feet, missing Autumn swinging trunk and tusks. He drove a knife into her leg and Autumn lost her form, letting out a scream of pain as she crumpled to the ground. The three remaining men tackled her, pinning her to the floor. "Levi! Get out of here! They won't hurt you! It's me that they want, remember?!" she screamed. McDowell chuckled, stepping forward. "She's right, my boy. You can't help who you are. You didn't choose to be bitten. But her...Autumn...she chose to be around you. She does not have our pity. You may leave, and no harm will come to you," he cooed, flashing a devilish grin. Autumn thrashed under the strength of the large men. "Levi! Get out! NOW" she bellowed. She had blood pouring from the wound in her leg and from the gash on her forehead.

Levi watched the scene, scrambling backwards as things crashed and bustled around. Wincing a bit as the knife was driven into her leg, he watched her change form, now her human self again. "Autumn," he said, his voice quiet as she once again screamed at him. Angrily, he turned on the older man, his hands balling into fists. "No, I didn't chose to be bitten," he said, his voice bordering on calm and furious. He ignored Autumn, not wanting to driven away from her. "I will chose something, though. Whether or not I'll kill you quickly and painlessly, or if you'll die like the scum you are." Stepping forward one more time, he barely stopped himself from attacking. Levi needed to reassess the situation. There were more of them than he could fight (all of them Shapeshifters), Autumn was wounded and probably couldn't run, and Levi was completely unarmed. Clearing his breath, he breathed deeply, going through his head on what to do. "Just let her go," he attempted, knowing that it wouldn't work.

McDowell grinned with satisfaction. "Oh silly, silly boy..." he chuckled, shaking his head. McDowell glanced over at Autumn, who was desperately trying to free herself, but with no avail. The old man turned back to Levi and let out a full fledged, cackle. His voice was breathy and weak, showing that he was as old as he appeared. If not older. He reached out, patting Levi's cheek. "You certainly are an innocent fellow, aren't you?" he cooed. When Autumn lifted her head to see McDowell reach a hand out to Levi, she was enraged. "Don't touch him!" she bellowed. It was as if the beast she once was in Africa awoke with fury and vengeance. She let out a snarl, shifting into a wolf almost instantly. The men restraining her didn't have time to act, for she forced herself out of their grip and tackled the old man. Though, he was just as fast as she with his shape change, if not faster. He took the form of a large black bear, but not fast enough for Autumn to not land an attack. She dug her teeth into his neck, ripping at his fur covered flesh with all of her might. The bear let out a roar and swung a mighty paw at Autumn. It swiped her across the stomach and sent her flying backward. Though the pain in her abdomen stung, she was far too furious and far too hyped up on adrenaline to give up now. She snarled and jumped for McDowell's thick furry neck again. She dug her wolf claws into his chest, causing as many wounds as she could. Before long, his age caught up with him. But at that point, the other shapeshifters had chosen their forms. One lion, another wolf, and a tiger. They all clawed and snapped at Autumn, but she had a vice-like grip on McDowell's neck and she wasn't letting go anytime soon. Though she could feel herself slipping into blackness. The loss of blood was getting to her, but she tried her best to work through her flickering vision. As she held her grip on McDowell's throat, he began to lose his shape. After a glow of blinding light, she stood with her teeth clenched around his human neck. She released her grip and jumped out of the pile. The other men, rather than pursuing her, began tending to their fallen leader. He'd live, perhaps. And so would she. As soon as she stepped out of the pile, her vision went black and she collapsed to the ground in an exhausted heap of blood and fur. She also lost her shape and lay, her own blood as well as the blood of others, pooling around her, now unconscious.

He shivered a bit as the older man patted his cheek. "Get off me," he muttered angrily, pulling back a bit. He knew he couldn't antagonize the men at the moment, as much as he wanted to. Even if he was a Vampire, who could live with little blood and was very difficult to kill, he couldn't do anything. Especially against this many Shapeshifters. He was helpless, whether he wanted to admit it or not. Absently, he let his eyes drift to Autumn. Autumn! He had to stop himself from contorting his face into a look of horror, for he knew it would only please the men further. Levi knew that this was his fault; he had caused her this pain, all because he had stuck around. If only he had left, then she wouldn't be in this situation. Before he could react to Autumn's shout, however, the scene exploded.

As she shifted near-instantly, Levi reeled backwards, falling onto a pile of crushed stone and hard rocks. Grunting in pain, he scrambled farther onto the mound, watching everything happen as if it was a rushed dream. Autumn attacking the older man, the others attacking her, blood everywhere; it was so insane and rushed that Levi couldn't comprehend it all at first. Eventually, the Shapeshifters were huddled over their master, completely ignoring the other two. "Autumn!" Nearly shaking, the Vampire jumped to his feet, bolting around the Shapeshifters to his friend. Crouching, he pulled her closer, cradling her unconscious form in his arms. Despite the immense fear and terror that was surging through his him, Levi's senses were also dulled by sheer amount of blood. He knew he wouldn't try anything, but it still pulled at him. "Autumn," he repeated, shaking her slightly. Once again, Levi was useless. He had done nothing but cause her more trouble and, in the end, himself the greatest pain of all.

Autumn's senses flickered into motion again. Her vision was full of white spots, but she could recognize the figure hovering above her was Levi. She attempted to sit up, but recoiled in pain. Looking down at her body, she saw the multiple gashes from the bear claws in her skin and her clothing soaked in blood. That's the bad part about shapeshifting, you retain your injuries. She winced in pain, looking up at her friend with a weak smile. She ignored the throbbing pain as best she could. It wasn't life threatening, but it certainly hurt like a bitch. She grabbed Levi's hand, staring up at him with concern. "You okay?" she asked. It felt as though she was in shock. The pain that was pounding through was subsiding. Although this seemed like a good thing, it wasn't. Once someone slipped into shock, they could injure themselves more and not realize it. Autumn flopped back to the ground and let out a sigh. "I don't suppose you could grab my phone and call us a cab? I don't think Andrew is going to be willing to take us to a hospital.." she groaned.

Levi felt a bit relieved as she gripped his hand, and smiled. As she spoke, however, he looked at her as if she was crazy. "Am I okay?" He raised an eyebrow, glancing back at the others to check that they were still occupied. "Yeah, we'll get to that as soon as we get out of here. We kind of have a few obstacles, though." He gestured towards the other Shapeshifters, a frightened look in his eyes. "Can you walk?" He pursed his lips, looking over her with a rather concerned look. "You lost quite a bit of blood. What the hell were you thinking back there? You could of died!" He sighed, regaining his senses and shrugging. "Oh well, it doesn't matter. Answer the question; can you walk?"

Autumn cringed at the question. She averted her gaze. "I had to protect you...It's my fault you're in this danger. If I hadn't been so stupid and fallen for Andrew, we'd be fine. You'd be safe.." she muttered. She spotted a pile of black plastic and crawled over to it. "And my camera would not be shattered," she added. She spotter her SD card in the pile and snatched it. She glanced over at Levi as she struggled to her feet. "Yeah, I can walk. But we'll get out of here faster on horseback," she pointed out. Autumn limped outside, forcing all the energy she had left to will her shape to change. "I'll only be able to stay like this for five minutes or so..." she said before she changed. After the light faded, she stood as a roan horse with a white mane and muzzle. In a large body, the injuries weren't as severe, so this actually helped. Giving a whinny, she jerked her head to her back, gesturing for Levi to hop on.

Levi followed, cringing a bit as she walked. It must have been painful, he knew. When she changed into the horse, and gestured for him to get on, he raised an eyebrow. He was of course a bit hesitant. Besides, it's not everyday that your friend turns into a horse, and offers you a ride. "Okay..." Gently, he mounted the horse, or Autumn, in this situation. The whole thing seemed a little odd to him, but he didn't argue, instead keeping close to her neck; Levi had never ridden a horse before, and although this horse wasn't completely a horse, he had no idea how to ride one. Shrugging, he cleared his throat, and shifted. "Well then, we should...be off?" Somewhere in the back of his mind, Levi was thinking about something a bit more important. As soon as they returned home, he would leave; he would be the source of no more pain.
